Custom Kitchen Cabinets in Playa del Carmen: Tropical Hardwood Guide
Updated September 2026 • By Recrea Construction • 6 min read
A kitchen is the most expensive joinery in the house and the hardest working. It takes steam, splash, heat from an oven, and in this climate a permanent 75–85% ambient humidity load whenever the air conditioning is off — which in most houses here is most of the day. The difference between a kitchen that looks new at year twelve and one that has swollen door edges at year four is decided in the specification, before anyone chooses a colour.
Below: what to use for the carcass, how each door finish behaves locally, why the hinge and drawer-runner grade matters more here than anywhere you have built before, and what a full kitchen costs per linear metre in Playa del Carmen in 2026.
Carcass, Doors and Countertops
Carcass. Marine or phenolic-glued plywood for anything under a sink, next to a dishwasher, or on an exterior wall; moisture-resistant MDF is acceptable elsewhere in an air-conditioned kitchen. Particleboard under a sink is the single most common failure we replace — one slow supply-line drip and the base is unrecoverable.
Doors. Four realistic options and how they behave on the coast:
- Catalysed lacquer / 2K polyurethane on MDF: the best value for a clean contemporary look. Closed surface, repairable, holds colour. Avoid high-gloss on a sun-facing wall — it shows every distortion.
- Thermofused laminate (TFL) and high-pressure laminate: extremely stable and forgiving in humidity. The honest workhorse; the giveaway is the edge detail, so specify laser-edged or 2 mm ABS, not thin tape.
- Solid tropical hardwood fronts on a plywood carcass: beautiful and locally sourced (tzalam, parota, chechen). Expect seasonal movement of a millimetre or two across a wide rail — design the reveals to absorb it.
- Veneer: gorgeous, and the least tolerant of a steam leak or a persistent damp spot. Only with a properly sealed carcass and good extraction.
Countertops. Local granite and quartzite are abundant and priced well. Engineered quartz performs superbly indoors but discolours under direct UV, so do not carry it out to an exposed terrace. Concrete and chukum finishes suit the regional aesthetic and need sealing on a schedule. For an outdoor kitchen, the surfaces that last are granite, porcelain slab and stainless.
Cabinet Pricing Per Linear Metre — Playa del Carmen 2026
Kitchens here are quoted per linear metre of run, counting upper and lower cabinets together, with countertops and appliances separate. These are our installed figures for Playa del Carmen; Tulum and Puerto Aventuras run 8–12% higher on access and logistics.
| Specification | MXN / linear metre | USD / linear metre |
|---|---|---|
| Laminate on moisture-resistant MDF, 304 hardware | $9,000–$14,000 | $500–$780 |
| Lacquered MDF fronts, marine plywood wet-zone carcasses, 316 hardware | $14,000–$22,000 | $780–$1,220 |
| Solid tzalam or parota fronts, plywood carcass, soft-close throughout | $20,000–$34,000 | $1,110–$1,890 |
| Countertop: local granite / quartzite | $2,800–$6,500 per m² | $155–$361 |
| Countertop: engineered quartz or porcelain slab | $5,500–$12,000 per m² | $306–$667 |
A typical 7-linear-metre kitchen with an island, in the middle specification, lands around $98,000–$154,000 MXN for cabinetry plus $25,000–$60,000 for stone. Appliances are usually the next largest line and are worth sourcing early — lead times on imported built-ins into Quintana Roo run long.

Layout and Services in a Coastal Kitchen
Local specifics that change a kitchen plan here:
- Extraction is a durability item, not a comfort item. A ducted hood that actually discharges outside removes the steam load that destroys cabinet interiors. Recirculating hoods keep the moisture in the room.
- Plan for water treatment. Municipal supply across the corridor is hard and often chlorinated; most of our clients want a filter at the sink and a softener upstream. Leave the cabinet space and the plumbing for it at rough-in.
- Toe-kick and plinth. Sealed plinths with removable panels so a leak dries and gets found. Cabinets sitting directly on tile wick water.
- Voltage and appliance reality. Mexican residential supply is 127 V; large imported ranges, some ovens and many US dryers need a 220 V circuit run deliberately. Decide before the electrical rough-in, not at installation.
- Second-home kitchens. If the house closes for months, specify vented plinth panels, leave a gap behind the base cabinets, and avoid veneer. It costs nothing and prevents the classic return-visit smell.
We fabricate kitchens in our own shop in Playa del Carmen, which keeps the substrate and hardware specification under our control and means a damaged front is remade rather than reordered. It also lets us match the kitchen to the closets, doors and furniture in the same species and finish — the detail that makes a house read as one project.
