Tropical Hardwood Furniture: Parota, Tzalam, Huanacaxtle Guide
Updated September 2026 • By Recrea Construction • 5 min read
The peninsula produces some of the best furniture timber in the Americas, and it is available within a few hours of Playa del Carmen: parota with its wide live-edge slabs, tzalam with its chocolate figure, chechen with dramatic colour, machiche and huanacaxtle for heavier work. Commissioning furniture from a local shop costs less than importing something comparable, and the piece is made for this climate rather than shipped into it.
The risk is the same as the opportunity: a slab bought wet and built immediately will move, crack and open its joints within a year, and by then the maker has moved on. This guide explains what to specify so that does not happen — drying and moisture content, joinery that accommodates movement, finishes that hold up to humidity and UV — and what commissioned pieces actually cost.
The Species, Honestly Compared
| Species | Character | Best for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parota (guanacaste) | Wide slabs, open grain, warm honey-brown, relatively light | Live-edge dining tables, benches, headboards | Wide boards move the most — drying and breadboard detailing are critical |
| Tzalam (Caribbean walnut) | Dense, chocolate with dark streaks, fine figure | Dining tables, cabinetry fronts, doors, decking | Colour deepens with UV; keep sets from one batch |
| Chechen (Caribbean rosewood) | Very hard, red-to-black variation | Table tops, accent pieces, flooring | The sap irritates skin — a fabrication issue, not an owner issue |
| Machiche | Heavy, tight-grained, dark red-brown | Structural furniture, outdoor benches, stair treads | Hard on tooling; expect a longer build time |
| Huanacaxtle | Figured, wide availability in slabs | Tables, consoles | Quality varies sharply by supplier and by log |
All of these are regionally harvested. Ask for documentation of legal origin — the reputable yards on the peninsula can produce it, and it is the single best filter on the supply chain.
Drying, Moisture Content and Movement
This is the part that decides whether a table survives. Timber reaches equilibrium with the air around it; in the Riviera Maya interior that equilibrium sits around 12–14% moisture content, and higher in a house without air conditioning. A slab that arrives at 20%+ will lose several percent after it becomes furniture, and it will do so by shrinking across the grain, which is how tops cup and how a mortise opens.
- Ask for a moisture meter reading, in writing, before fabrication. Target 10–14% for interior furniture here. A maker who cannot tell you the number is not measuring it.
- Air-dried plus a kiln cycle is the practical local standard: a year or more of air drying, then a kiln to finish and to kill insects. Kiln-only on a thick slab often leaves a wet core.
- Design for movement. Breadboard ends with elongated fixing slots, tops attached with buttons or figure-8 fasteners rather than screwed rigid, and no wide panel trapped in a tight frame.
- Never let the piece dry in place next to a window. Sun on one face and cool air on the other cups a top faster than anything else.
Cracks in parota slabs are normal and are usually stabilised with bow ties or epoxy fills. Done deliberately, they are part of the character. Appearing a year after delivery, they mean the slab was wet.

Finish choice matters as much as species for how the piece ages. Indoors, a catalysed lacquer or hardwax oil both work; oil is repairable in place, lacquer is more resistant to spills. Outdoors under a palapa or pergola, use a UV-stabilised exterior oil and accept a re-oiling cycle of 12–24 months, or let the timber silver deliberately. Fully exposed to sun and rain, only the densest species (machiche, ipé, teak) are worth the money, with 316 stainless fixings throughout.
