A media room is one of the few parts of a tropical house where the climate fights the equipment directly. Projectors, AV receivers and amplifiers generate heat, dislike humidity, and sit in a sealed dark room. Speaker drivers use paper and foam that mould. Screens can grow spots. And every piece of it is exposed to the surge events that come with the grid here.

None of this is a reason to skip a cinema room — we build them regularly, including in rental villas where a media room genuinely improves booking performance. It is a reason to design one for this climate: conditioned and ventilated, protected electrically, treated with materials that do not hold moisture, and specified so that a failure is a component swap rather than a rebuild.

Climate: the Three Things That Kill AV Here

• Humidity. Sustained relative humidity above roughly 65% grows mould on speaker cones, foam surrounds, projector optics and screen surfaces, and corrodes board contacts. The fix is a room that is either conditioned continuously or dehumidified on a humidistat — not air conditioning that runs only when someone is watching a film.
• Heat. Equipment racks in a closed cabinet reach temperatures that halve component life. Every rack we build is actively ventilated, with intake low, extraction high, and thermostatic fan control. A projector needs its own clear air path and a filter that is actually accessible for cleaning.
• Surge. The peninsula's lightning season plus utility switching events make AV the most commonly destroyed equipment category in a coastal house. Whole-house protection at the panel plus a good rack-level conditioner is the minimum; for a serious system add an online UPS so the projector lamp and electronics shut down gracefully instead of being cut mid-cycle.

One layout consequence: put the rack outside the room if you can — in a ventilated service closet with the cabling pre-run. It keeps heat and fan noise out of the room and makes service possible without moving furniture, and in a house that sits empty it can be isolated and kept dry on its own small circuit.

Acoustic Treatment That Does Not Grow Mould

The standard acoustic toolkit — open-cell foam, fabric-wrapped fibreglass, heavy carpet, upholstered seating — is a list of materials that hold moisture. Substitutions that work here:

• Mineral wool instead of fibreglass batt inside panels, wrapped in a breathable acoustic fabric rather than a vinyl that traps damp behind it.
• Slatted or perforated hardwood panels over a mineral wool cavity. They diffuse well, they suit the regional aesthetic, and they dry. Tzalam and chechen both work and we build them in our own shop.
• Hard flooring with a removable rug, not fitted carpet. The rug can be lifted, cleaned and replaced; carpet glued to a slab in this climate is a long-term problem.
• Leather or performance-fabric seating, not untreated cotton or linen upholstery, and set on legs so air moves underneath.
• Solid-core doors with proper seals for isolation — which also helps keep the room's conditioned air where it belongs.

Do the room geometry before the materials: a rectangular room with the seats out of the exact centre, speakers off the wall plane, and the first reflection points treated will outperform an untreated room with expensive electronics every time.

Costs, and the Outdoor Cinema Alternative — 2026

The outdoor option deserves a serious look. In a climate where the best hours are after sunset outdoors, a retractable screen under a palapa or pergola with weather-rated speakers often delivers more actual use than an indoor cinema — and it photographs extremely well for a rental listing. The equipment has to be genuinely exterior-rated (IP-rated speakers, a projector in a ventilated enclosure or an outdoor LED panel, marine-grade fixings) and it should be on a circuit that can be isolated before a storm.

For new builds the decision that costs almost nothing now and a lot later is the pre-wire: conduit to the screen wall and speaker positions, a ventilated rack location, an HDMI-capable conduit path with a pull string, and a dedicated circuit. We run it on every house where a media room is even a possibility.
