Every rainy season and hurricane leaves potholes on Holbox; we repair with hot mix and rebuilt bases, then seal and re-stripe so the same spots do not fail again. Streets flood after rain because the water table is near the surface; grades, permeable paving and avoiding hard surfaces are the main tools.
Routing and hot rubberised sealant that keeps water out of the base and slows deterioration.
Remove worn surface, keep kerb and drain levels and lay a new wearing course.
Yearly inspection, post-hurricane response and scheduled works for hotels, condos and plazas.
High season from December to April and summer holidays crowd the streets; works are planned in short phases with minimal noise and machinery. Repairs and sealing are scheduled in these windows, by sections, with traffic kept moving.
All materials cross by ferry from Chiquilá and move on the island with small vehicles, which makes Holbox the most expensive zone for paving and earthworks. We choose hot mix, concrete or pavers for each repair according to this supply situation.
The island is sand over shell and limestone with a very high water table, so conventional asphalt structures are rarely suitable; pavers, stabilised sand and concrete are the realistic options.
Holbox has sand streets used by golf carts and bicycles, a growing number of hotels and villas, and demand for durable, permeable street surfaces that fit the island’s character.
