Wastewater Treatment Plant Construction for Hotels and Developments
Much of Tulum, the coast between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, Holbox and many new developments have no municipal sewer, and under the Riviera Maya lies a karst aquifer where untreated water travels straight to cenotes and the reef. A hotel, condo tower or residential community here needs its own wastewater treatment plant (PTAR) that meets Mexican discharge standards, survives the climate and is simple enough for your staff to run. We design, build, equip and commission them.
A Recrea Construction project
2026 costs (civil works + equipment): compact plant for a boutique hotel or small condo (10–50 m³/day) $900,000–$3.5M MXN; hotel or tower (50–200 m³/day) $3.5M–$12M MXN; residential development or resort (200–1,000 m³/day) $12M–$45M+ MXN. Effluent reuse, sludge handling and permits are priced separately.
What We Deliver
Process Design
Flow and load study, choice of technology (extended aeration, SBR, MBBR or MBR) and sizing for peak occupancy, not averages.
Watertight Civil Works
Reinforced-concrete tanks with waterproof admixtures and leak testing, excavated in rock with the right protection for karst.
Equipment & Electrical
Blowers, pumps, screens, clarifiers, membranes, disinfection, control panels and generator back-up.
Effluent Reuse
Treated water for irrigation, toilet flushing and cooling, to NOM-003 quality, cutting potable water demand.
Permits & Compliance
CONAGUA discharge permit, municipal and environmental files, and lab testing to NOM-001-SEMARNAT-2021.
Start-Up & O&M
Commissioning, biological start-up, operator training, maintenance plans and optional service contracts.
Choosing the right technology
Extended aeration / activated sludge: robust and economical for steady loads, such as condos and residential communities.
SBR (sequencing batch reactor): one tank does several steps in cycles; good for variable flows and small footprints.
MBBR: plastic carriers hold the biomass, so the plant is compact and copes well with the occupancy swings of hotels.
MBR (membrane bioreactor): the highest effluent quality and the smallest footprint, ideal when water is reused or the site is tight; higher energy and membrane costs.
We size for the busiest week of high season, add equalisation for check-out peaks and design odour and noise control so the plant can sit near guest areas.
Why karst changes the design
The Yucatán Peninsula sits on porous limestone with no rivers on the surface: whatever goes into the ground reaches the aquifer, the cenotes and the sea. That is why we build watertight concrete tanks and test them before backfilling, avoid absorption pits for raw sewage, and design the final disposal — reuse, sewer connection where available or a permitted deep well — together with your environmental consultant. A plant that fails here does not just smell; it can stop a hotel's operation and trigger fines.
In 2026 a compact plant for a boutique hotel or small condo (10–50 m³/day) costs about $0.9M–$3.5M MXN, a hotel or tower plant (50–200 m³/day) $3.5M–$12M MXN, and a plant for a development or resort $12M–$45M+ MXN including civil works and equipment.
Where there is no municipal sewer, or where the authority requires it for the size of the project, yes. Even with sewer, many hotels treat and reuse their water to cut costs. Your environmental impact authorisation usually sets the requirement.
Discharges to national waters or the ground follow NOM-001-SEMARNAT-2021, discharges to municipal sewer NOM-002, and water reused for irrigation or services NOM-003. We design to the applicable one and hand over lab results.
Yes. We audit the plant, fix undersizing, broken equipment or leaking tanks, and often convert to MBBR to increase capacity in the same footprint.
