Why potholes come back, and how we stop them
A pothole is a symptom: water got into the base through cracks or ponding, the base softened and traffic broke the surface. Cold patch on top of a wet base fails within weeks. A permanent repair removes the failed material, rebuilds and compacts the base, uses hot mix with tack coat on vertical edges and seals the joints. Then we deal with the cause: we seal the cracks, fix the ponding and clear the drains, so the same spot does not fail again.
Repair, resurface or rebuild?
- Preventive: surface is sound but grey and cracked; crack sealing plus seal coat or slurry, every 3–5 years.
- Corrective: isolated potholes and alligator cracking; structural patches, then sealing.
- Resurfacing: widespread wear but a sound base; milling and a 4–5 cm overlay.
- Reconstruction: failed base or chronic flooding; rebuild layers and fix the drainage.
