Cancún residents know the pattern: in the dry months and peak season, pressure drops and some neighbourhoods go days with little water, while from June to November tropical downpours flood the streets. Capturing that rain and reusing greywater turns the problem around. For villas in Isla Dorada, Lagos del Sol and Cumbres, towers in Puerto Cancún and Tajamar and hotels with large gardens, it means fewer tanker trucks, lower bills and less dependence on the network.
Rooftop capture and underground cisterns for houses in gated communities, with automatic switch to the network.
Greywater recycling for toilets and gardens, plus larger cisterns for resilience during cuts.
Irrigation and laundry reuse for Hotel Zone and downtown hotels with big water bills.
Capture and retention that also reduces flooding of driveways and basements in heavy rain.
Separate non-potable networks planned in new builds and renovations.
Level sensors and alerts on your phone, so you know your reserve before the next cut.
Most of Cancún’s rain falls between June and November, with heavy single events during tropical storms, while March to May is dry. A cistern sized only on annual totals runs empty exactly when the network is weakest. We model rainfall and demand month by month, add first-flush diverters so roof dirt and salt stay out, and size overflow for storm intensity so the system also protects the house from flooding.
In multi-storey buildings, greywater recycling for toilets is usually the biggest win: a large, steady volume reused every day. It needs a separate riser and treatment room, so it is easiest in new towers and major renovations. For existing hotels, irrigation and laundry reuse can be added with less disruption.
| System | Typical client | Cost (MXN) |
|---|---|---|
| Rainwater harvesting | Villa in a gated community | $80k–$450k |
| Greywater recycling | Villa or small condo | $90k–$400k |
| Combined system | Condo tower or hotel | $1.5M–$6M |
