Hot-mix asphalt in Cancún only lasts when the mix arrives hot, the base is sound and the thickness is what the contract says. Cancún has the shortest haul to hot-mix plants and sascab and crushed-stone quarries in the north of the state, so asphalt arrives hot and material prices are the regional benchmark.
Truck yards, bus terminals and service areas with thicker layers and stronger bases.
Base, prime coat and hot mix laid with a paver and compacted with steel and pneumatic rollers.
Polymer-modified binders and stone-rich mixes that resist rutting at high temperatures.
Traffic on main avenues forces night work for connections and resurfacing; the rainy season from June to October is the hardest time for earthworks, and the drier months from December to May are the best paving window. Laying is scheduled with the plant and around these windows, so the mix is compacted at the right temperature.
Downtown and the south-west sit on firm limestone close to the surface with pockets of sascab, while the Hotel Zone and lagoon edges are sand and fill over mangrove soils, where bases must be thicker and compaction checked more carefully. We check and correct the base for these conditions before any asphalt is laid.
Large parts of the city flood in heavy storms because there is little storm sewer; every parking lot or street needs its own inlets and infiltration wells, and the water table near the lagoon limits how deep those wells can work.
Cancún generates most of the paving work in the state: industrial parks and logistics yards along the airport road and Highway 307, plaza and hotel car parks, new subdivisions in the south-west and constant resurfacing of condo streets and private roads.
