Hot-mix asphalt on Holbox only lasts when the mix arrives hot, the base is sound and the thickness is what the contract says. All materials cross by ferry from Chiquilá and move on the island with small vehicles, which makes Holbox the most expensive zone for paving and earthworks.
Private driveways, condo streets and club access roads, with neat edges and level transitions.
Mix temperature on arrival, core samples for thickness and density, and a written report.
Milling where levels require it, tack coat and a new wearing course over sound old asphalt.
High season from December to April and summer holidays crowd the streets; works are planned in short phases with minimal noise and machinery. Laying is scheduled with the plant and around these windows, so the mix is compacted at the right temperature.
The island is sand over shell and limestone with a very high water table, so conventional asphalt structures are rarely suitable; pavers, stabilised sand and concrete are the realistic options. We check and correct the base for these conditions before any asphalt is laid.
Streets flood after rain because the water table is near the surface; grades, permeable paving and avoiding hard surfaces are the main tools.
Holbox has sand streets used by golf carts and bicycles, a growing number of hotels and villas, and demand for durable, permeable street surfaces that fit the island’s character.
