Hot-mix asphalt in Xpu-Há only lasts when the mix arrives hot, the base is sound and the thickness is what the contract says. About 30 minutes from our yard; hot-mix trucks reach the highway easily but narrow private roads limit the size of pavers and rollers, so long roads are paved in shorter daily sections.
Private driveways, condo streets and club access roads, with neat edges and level transitions.
Mix temperature on arrival, core samples for thickness and density, and a written report.
Milling where levels require it, tack coat and a new wearing course over sound old asphalt.
Hotels and residents depend on a single access road, so works keep one lane open and are timed around check-in and deliveries; the rainy season makes sascab work difficult from June to October. Laying is scheduled with the plant and around these windows, so the mix is compacted at the right temperature.
Between the highway and the beach the ground is limestone with cenotes and thin soil, changing to sand near the coast; sascab roads here rut and wash out quickly without a proper base and crossfall. We check and correct the base for these conditions before any asphalt is laid.
Unpaved roads lose material with every storm and turn into channels; crossfall, side drains and permeable or sealed surfaces stop the yearly cycle of regrading.
Xpu-Há has long private access roads through the jungle to beach hotels, villas and condos, many still in sascab, plus car parks and service yards for resorts along the highway.
