Hot-mix asphalt in Bacalar only lasts when the mix arrives hot, the base is sound and the thickness is what the contract says. About three and a half hours from our yard but close to Chetumal’s suppliers; hot mix and materials come from the south of the state, which keeps costs slightly below Cancún.
Polymer-modified binders and stone-rich mixes that resist rutting at high temperatures.
Truck yards, bus terminals and service areas with thicker layers and stronger bases.
Base, prime coat and hot mix laid with a paver and compacted with steel and pneumatic rollers.
Tourist traffic peaks in winter and holidays; works near the lagoon are best planned in the dry season to avoid sediment runoff during heavy rain. Laying is scheduled with the plant and around these windows, so the mix is compacted at the right temperature.
Around the lagoon the ground is soft white limestone and sascab with clay areas; bases can lose strength when wet, so drainage and compaction control are critical. We check and correct the base for these conditions before any asphalt is laid.
The municipality of Bacalar and environmental authorities protect the lagoon of seven colours and its stromatolites, so runoff and sediment from roadworks near the shore are strictly controlled.
Runoff must never carry sediment or oil into the lagoon; designs use swales, sediment traps, permeable paving and infiltration away from the shore rather than direct discharge.
