Where trucks turn, water sits or the look matters on Holbox, concrete and pavers outlast asphalt and can let rain soak into the ground. Streets flood after rain because the water table is near the surface; grades, permeable paving and avoiding hard surfaces are the main tools.
Pedestrian paths, golf-cart routes and promenades with root barriers, lighting and drainage.
Concrete roads, yards and loading areas with doweled joints, curing compound and saw-cut control joints.
Concrete and stone pavers on a compacted base and bedding sand, easy to lift and relay for services.
Holbox is inside the Yum Balam protected area; the island limits cars, and any street or site work faces strict environmental rules and coordination with the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas. Permeable pavers, pervious concrete or grass pavers are chosen where these rules and the site make them the right answer.
The island is sand over shell and limestone with a very high water table, so conventional asphalt structures are rarely suitable; pavers, stabilised sand and concrete are the realistic options. Base thickness, joints and edge restraints are designed for this ground so slabs and pavers stay level.
All materials cross by ferry from Chiquilá and move on the island with small vehicles, which makes Holbox the most expensive zone for paving and earthworks.
High season from December to April and summer holidays crowd the streets; works are planned in short phases with minimal noise and machinery.
