We design and build gardens on Holbox with native and adapted plants, real topsoil over the limestone, irrigation and lighting, then maintain them if you are away. Holbox sits between the Gulf and a shallow lagoon: very humid, salty and exposed to northers in winter, so wood, metal and paint need extra protection and frequent maintenance.
Drip lines and sprinklers on timers, with filters for hard water and connection to cisterns or treated greywater.
Low-voltage LED uplights, path lights and palm lighting, with waterproof connections that survive the rainy season.
Pruning, fertilising, pest control and hurricane preparation for villas, condos and hotels.
Fresh water is scarce and supplied irregularly, so bathrooms and gardens are designed with low-flow fittings, cisterns and treated greywater wherever possible. The plant palette, windbreaks and soil depth are chosen for this exposure, not copied from a catalogue.
The island is part of the Yum Balam protected area, so works need municipal and environmental approval, building heights and materials are restricted, and vehicles on the island are limited. Drip lines, timers and storage are sized to this supply so the garden survives the dry season.
Everything arrives by ferry from Chiquilá and moves on sand streets by golf cart or small truck, about three hours plus the crossing from our workshops, so jobs are planned in tight batches.
High season runs from winter to summer holidays, so most hotels schedule renovation and maintenance in the quieter autumn months.
Holbox has small hotels, guesthouses and wooden or palapa houses on sand streets, where owners mostly need repairs, bathrooms, paint and maintenance rather than large new builds.
