We design and build gardens in Mahahual with native and adapted plants, real topsoil over the limestone, irrigation and lighting, then maintain them if you are away. The village is fully exposed to the Caribbean and to hurricanes, so marine-grade metal, strong fixings and hurricane-ready finishes are essential; Hurricane Dean in 2007 flattened much of the village, and today shutters, anchored roofs and stainless hardware are part of every serious job.
Palms, chit and kuka palms, ziricote, bougainvillea, ferns and grasses chosen for sun, shade and salt exposure.
Low-voltage LED uplights, path lights and palm lighting, with waterproof connections that survive the rainy season.
Pruning, fertilising, pest control and hurricane preparation for villas, condos and hotels.
Supply is limited and many buildings use cisterns and rainwater, so low-flow fittings and storage are standard, and we often add rainwater collection from the roof to the cistern, with first-flush filters, to keep bathrooms and gardens working in the dry months. The plant palette, windbreaks and soil depth are chosen for this exposure, not copied from a catalogue.
Licences come from Othón P. Blanco municipality; the coast is under ZOFEMAT and close to the Banco Chinchorro reserve, so exterior works follow environmental limits. Drip lines, timers and storage are sized to this supply so the garden survives the dry season.
Mahahual is about four hours from our workshops; we source cement, tile and fittings from Chetumal, about two hours away, bring specialised items from the north in one load and organise multi-day stays with crews lodged in the village.
Mahahual is a small Costa Maya village with beach hotels, rentals and houses on the malecón and the road south, where most jobs are repairs, bathrooms, paint and storm recovery; many buildings are wooden or light block structures from the years after Hurricane Dean, and owners usually upgrade them step by step between seasons.
Cruise-ship days and holidays bring peaks, so works in hotels are planned around them, with noisy tasks on days without ships and the quietest months, September and October, kept for larger renovations.
