EV charging in Quintana Roo has moved from curiosity to a routine request, driven by two things: rental guests arriving in EVs from Cancún airport rentals, and owners who want a charger before they need one. The installation itself is simple electrical work. What is not simple is the supply — Mexican residential service is 127 V, a Level 2 charger wants 220 V at 32–48 A, and the existing service to many houses here has no spare capacity for it.
This covers the load calculation that determines whether your service can take a charger at all, what installation costs in 2026, the difference between doing it during construction and retrofitting, and what hotels and rental complexes should install if they want the booking advantage without a service upgrade.
Load Calculation and Service Capacity
Start with what the charger draws and what your service can spare. A 7.4 kW single-phase Level 2 charger at 220 V pulls about 32 A continuously for hours. That is a substantial, sustained load — comparable to running three or four air conditioners without a break.
- Check the service rating and the existing calculated load against the panel. Many villas here were wired with little headroom once the air conditioning, pool and water pumps were counted.
- If there is no headroom, the options are a service upgrade with CFE, a lower-power charger (16–20 A), or a load-management device that throttles the charger when the rest of the house is drawing heavily. The third is usually the cheapest and works well — overnight charging rarely competes with peak household load.
- Mind the tariff. Regular EV charging adds enough consumption to push a household across CFE's high-consumption threshold and onto the DAC tariff, where per-kWh costs rise steeply. Pairing a charger with solar is not just green — on DAC it is what keeps the running cost sane.
- Dedicated circuit, dedicated protection. A charger requires its own circuit with the correct conductor size for a continuous load and GFCI/RCD protection appropriate to the equipment. No shared circuits, no extension arrangements.

Note the gap between the last two rows and everything above them. Running conduit and leaving a panel way while the walls are open costs almost nothing; chasing a 220 V circuit through finished walls, a tiled terrace and a garden to reach a carport is most of the retrofit price. Coastal Siting and Hotel Charging
Where the unit goes matters here more than in a temperate climate. A charger on a salt-exposed wall needs a genuinely weather-rated enclosure, a gasketed cover and a drip loop at the cable entry; the failures we see are water ingress and corroded terminals, not electronics. Keep it out of direct afternoon sun — heat derates the unit and shortens its life — and above any plausible flood or storm-surge level. Cable management on a wall hook rather than the floor keeps the lead out of standing water.
For rentals, a single 7.4 kW charger with a simple access method is enough to appear in listing filters and to satisfy guests charging overnight. Choose a unit with a locally supported warranty channel and an app that does not require the owner's personal account to authorise a guest.
For hotels and condo complexes, the sensible pattern is several lower-power bays sharing a managed supply rather than a couple of high-power ones: four 7 kW bays with load management typically need a smaller supply than two 22 kW bays, cost less to install, and serve more guests overnight. Add per-session billing if the charging is not meant to be free, and put the whole installation on a circuit that can be isolated for storm preparation.
