We protect beachfront land in Mahahual with an engineered approach: survey, soft solutions first (dunes, geotubes), rock revetments or seawalls only where they are needed, and works outside turtle season. Mahahual is a small Costa Maya town with beachfront villas, dive lodges and the cruise pier; premium projects are few but large, with docks, spas and storm-ready envelopes.
Sand-filled geotextile tubes, buried in the dune, that act as a last line of defence.
Underpinning, crack and rebar repair and toe protection for existing walls that are failing.
Sand nourishment, sand fencing and native dune plants that rebuild the beach naturally.
The village is fully exposed to the Caribbean and to hurricanes, so marine-grade metal, strong fixings and hurricane-ready finishes are essential; Hurricane Dean in 2007 flattened much of the village, and today shutters, anchored roofs and stainless hardware are part of every serious job. Every frontage is surveyed and compared with its neighbours, because coastal works that ignore the next lot usually fail.
Licences come from Othón P. Blanco municipality; the coast is under ZOFEMAT and close to the Banco Chinchorro reserve, so exterior works follow environmental limits. Hurricane waves, sargassum and seasonal sand movement set the crest height, toe depth and material of each solution.
Mahahual is about four hours from our workshops; we source cement, tile and fittings from Chetumal, about two hours away, bring specialised items from the north in one load and organise multi-day stays with crews lodged in the village.
Supply is limited and many buildings use cisterns and rainwater, so low-flow fittings and storage are standard, and we often add rainwater collection from the roof to the cistern, with first-flush filters, to keep bathrooms and gardens working in the dry months.
