Seawalls, Beach Erosion and Coastal Protection in the Riviera Maya

Hurricanes, sargassum and winter storms move the Caribbean shoreline every year, and a beachfront property can lose metres of sand in one season. We repair and build rock revetments, seawalls, geotube systems and restored dunes for villas, hotels and condominiums, choosing the softest solution that will work, because a badly placed wall moves the erosion to your neighbour and back to you.

Quick answer: In the Riviera Maya in 2026 a reinforced concrete seawall costs about $35,000–$80,000 MXN per linear metre and a rock revetment $25,000–$60,000 MXN/m. Geotubes ($15,000–$35,000 MXN/m) and dune restoration are cheaper and often more effective.

2026 prices: rock revetment (escollera) $25,000–$60,000 MXN per linear m; geotube system $15,000–$35,000 MXN/linear m; reinforced concrete seawall $35,000–$80,000 MXN/linear m; dune restoration with native vegetation $1,500–$4,000 MXN/m². Coastal studies, ZOFEMAT and environmental permits are quoted separately.

What We Do

Rock Revetments

Sloped armour stone on geotextile that absorbs wave energy instead of reflecting it.

Geotube Systems

Sand-filled geotextile tubes, buried in the dune, that act as a last line of defence.

Seawall Repair

Underpinning, crack and rebar repair and toe protection for existing walls that are failing.

Dune Restoration

Sand nourishment, sand fencing and native dune plants that rebuild the beach naturally.

Structural Protection

Deeper foundations, piles and raised slabs for beachfront buildings exposed to surge.

Studies & Permits

Coastal studies, ZOFEMAT, SEMARNAT and turtle-season planning.

Soft first, hard only where it is justified

Vertical walls reflect waves and scour the sand in front of them; in many cases they accelerate the erosion they were built to stop, and federal authorities increasingly restrict them. We start with a site assessment: beach profile, historical shoreline, the state of neighbouring properties and what the authority is likely to approve. Then we propose the softest effective answer, dune restoration, buried geotubes or a sloped revetment, and keep vertical walls for where a building is genuinely at risk.

Rules that shape every coastal project

  • ZOFEMAT: the first 20 m from the high-tide line is federal; works there need a concession or permit.
  • Environmental impact: coastal works usually require an MIA before SEMARNAT.
  • Turtle season: from roughly May to October nesting beaches restrict machinery and night lighting; we plan the schedule around it.
  • Neighbours: erosion is a shared problem; joint projects between adjoining properties work better and permit more easily.

Frequently Asked Questions

In the Riviera Maya in 2026 a reinforced concrete seawall costs about $35,000–$80,000 MXN per linear metre and a rock revetment $25,000–$60,000 MXN/m. Geotubes ($15,000–$35,000 MXN/m) and dune restoration are cheaper and often more effective.

Only with permits. The beach and the first 20 m of land are federal (ZOFEMAT), and coastal works generally need an environmental impact authorisation. Vertical walls are increasingly restricted, so the design must be justified.

They protect what is behind them but often worsen erosion in front and on neighbouring lots. Sloped revetments, geotubes and restored dunes absorb wave energy and usually keep more beach.

Outside turtle-nesting season, roughly November to April, which also avoids the peak of the hurricane season.
