We protect beachfront land on Holbox with an engineered approach: survey, soft solutions first (dunes, geotubes), rock revetments or seawalls only where they are needed, and works outside turtle season. Holbox is a car-free island of boutique hotels and low-rise villas; premium work here means spas, plunge pools, small courts and lagoon-side docks, with every material ferried from Chiquilá.
Sloped armour stone on geotextile that absorbs wave energy instead of reflecting it.
Sand-filled geotextile tubes, buried in the dune, that act as a last line of defence.
Underpinning, crack and rebar repair and toe protection for existing walls that are failing.
Holbox sits between the Gulf and a shallow lagoon: very humid, salty and exposed to northers in winter, so wood, metal and paint need extra protection and frequent maintenance. Every frontage is surveyed and compared with its neighbours, because coastal works that ignore the next lot usually fail.
The island is part of the Yum Balam protected area, so works need municipal and environmental approval, building heights and materials are restricted, and vehicles on the island are limited. Hurricane waves, sargassum and seasonal sand movement set the crest height, toe depth and material of each solution.
High season runs from winter to summer holidays, so most hotels schedule renovation and maintenance in the quieter autumn months.
Fresh water is scarce and supplied irregularly, so bathrooms and gardens are designed with low-flow fittings, cisterns and treated greywater wherever possible.
